A Paw-fect Afternoon of Music, sunshine and smiles at Taylor Park, St Helens!

Band members were delighted to step in at short notice to perform at Taylor Park, St Helens, at the weekend, following an invitation from the Friends of Taylor Park. The Friends of Taylor Park are a wonderful local organisation based in St Helens designed to showcase the many activities and music making opportunities the park has to offer.

The band are grateful to accomplished cornet and flugel horn player and Musical Director Peter Littlehales stepping in for the day to conduct us. Peter has been helping the band out playing and conducting a few rehearsals recently and we appreciate his time and support. Peter is a previous member of Skelmersdale Band and his daughter Jenny is currently helping us out on cornet, which makes having their continuing support that extra bit special!

It was a lovely afternoon playing by the lake in the sunshine to an appreciative crowd of all ages, with plenty of smiling faces enjoying the music, café treats and ice creams. The band performed a selection of brass band favourites including Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Floral Dance and Breezing Down Broadway, Amazing Grace (and more!) before finishing the afternoon in rousing style with a lively rendition of YMCA that had the crowd up on their feet.

One of our favourite things to do as a band is to speak to people who take the time out to listen to us play. It was especially lovely to chat with members of the audience during the afternoon including 86-year-old Bernard, who shared fond memories of coming to the park with his father to listen to live music many years ago. We loved having six month old Gabriel enjoying the music and ice cream too. We also had our very own Skelmersdale Band doggy mascot enjoying the afternoon alongside us, looking very dapper in her Skelmersdale Band neckerchief !!

As always, it was wonderful to be out performing in our local community and supporting such a fantastic community initiative. We are very grateful for the generous donations received throughout the afternoon which help to keep our band running and we would like to thank the Friends of Taylor Park for inviting us to be part of such a special day.
